Ashley Tellis Arrested in U.S

• Former U.S. government official, Ashley Tellis, has been arrested in the U.S. for possession of secret defence documents and accessing sensitive military hardware information.

• Tellis, an Indian-origin former official, was under surveillance over meetings with Chinese officials for at least three years.

• Tellis, 64, is known for his public speaking role in foreign policy circles and his close relationship with officials handling the India-U.S. relationship in Delhi and Washington.

• The arrest was based on the “unlawful retention of national defense information,” violating 18 U.S.C. § 793(e), a law relating to gathering, transmitting or losing national security information.

• A Federal district judge will determine his sentencing, with up to 10 years in prison or fines if convicted.

• Tellis was taken into custody on October 11, following seizures at his residence in Vienna, Virginia, based on a special warrant.

• Accusations of Tellis being in touch with Chinese officials, including a meeting on September 15, 2022, have been met with particular comment.
