West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Issues Show-Cause Notices to BLOs

• The Chief Electoral Officer in West Bengal has issued show-cause notices to nearly 1,000 booth-level officers (BLOs) for alleged non-compliance with election-related directives under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

• BLOs have allegedly failed to register their names on a designated portal despite repeated requests from the Electoral Registration Officer.

• BLOs have been directed to reply within 72 hours of receiving the notice.

• State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders claim BLOs are “scared” due to the intimidation politics of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

• The TMC claims the CEO’s office has no authority to issue such notices as the authority of the Electoral Commission (EC) only comes into the picture after the Model Code of Conduct for election is in place.

• The BJP faces a shortage of booth level agents due to the EC’s plans to add nearly 14,000 new polling booths amid the SIR exercise in West Bengal.
