Record Clean Energy Investments Still Insufficient to Control Warming

• The State of Climate Action Report highlights that while the world is moving towards achieving the Paris Climate Change Pact’s goals, it is at a slower pace than expected.

• Coal use reached a record high in 2024, despite a decrease in fossil fuels in the energy mix.

• The report suggests that the world is not close to limiting the long-term temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the Paris Pact’s primary objective.

• The report also notes that US President Donald Trump’s efforts to halt low-carbon projects have not led to more greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

• Clean energy investments have also exceeded milestones, with global investment in new renewable energy projects up 10% from the previous year.

• The International Energy Agency believes that current investments are not high enough to neutralize the effects of fossil-fuel use.

• The Paris Agreement’s revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are due to be submitted at COP 30 in Brazil, which will determine the global emissions trajectory through 2035.
