Friends of Jilipibala Documentary Set to Premiere at Kolkata International Film Festival

• A documentary on a tamarind tree in Kolkata’s Vidyasagar Colony, home to several bird species, is set to premiere at the Kolkata International Film Festival.

• The tree, planted 70 years ago by freedom fighter Parul Mukherjee, is a significant historical landmark.

• The tree was threatened by builders reclaiming the old building where Mukherjee lived before her death in 1990.

• The film’s director, Debalina Majumder, launched a cultural movement to save the tree, which was later restructured to leave it on land owned by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

• The documentary aims to highlight the vulnerability of urban fauna to urban redevelopment projects and the need for similar mobilisation against tree-cutting.

• The film is among 10 selected for the National Competition on Documentary category.
