Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi Commits to Higher Defence Spending and ties with India

• Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has committed to increasing Japan’s defense spending to 2% of its GDP by March 2026, two years ahead of schedule.

• Takaichi’s government’s first priority is to tackle inflation and boost fiscal spending.

• She pledged support for “security partnerships” like the Quad, including India.

• Takaichi cited Russia, China, and North Korea as “serious concerns” and promised to deepen Japan’s “multilateral security consultations” involving the U.S., South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, and the Quad.

• The announcement comes a day before Takaichi leaves for Malaysia to meet with ASEAN counterparts and prepare for U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Japan.

• Takaichi promised to elevate the Japan-U.S. relationship to “even greater heights”.

• She also called Japan’s population decline its “biggest problem” and suggested controls on foreign nationals working in the country.

• Takaichi’s Cabinet includes familiar faces from New Delhi, including Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Internal Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, and Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.
