Indians Enlisted in Russian Army in Russia-Ukraine War

• Sandeep Sunda, a 23-year-old Indian Army jawan, has been enlisted in the Russian Army and forced to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war zone.

• At least two Indians have been killed in the war since September, with one body arriving from Russia on October 18.

• Sunda’s brother, Prabhudayal, has petitioned various government offices for his brother’s rescue from Russia, but has not received any response.

• Sunda’s brother was hired by a contractor to assist Russian soldiers with food and logistics, but was never meant to join the war.

• Sunda’s brother was promised ₹1.5 lakh for assisting Russian soldiers with food and activities, but his passport was confiscated and he and others were taken to the border.

• The Indian Embassy in Moscow and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have informed them that they are awaiting the response from Russia.

• Two relatives, Mahaveer Prasad and Surender Dahiya, remain incommunicado since September 7.

• The MEA has taken up the matter with Russian authorities to end the practice of recruiting Indians in the war.

• In August 2024, the Russian Embassy stated it no longer admits Indians into its Army and is working in “close coordination” with Indian authorities to help discharge Indian nationals recruited for the war in Ukraine.
