Lokpal’s Performance and Public Engagement Decline

• Lokpal, an anti-corruption body in India, has seen a sharp decline in public engagement since its inception in 2019-20.

• The body has received a total of 6,955 complaints, 90% of which were received in the first four years of its establishment till 2023.

• The Lokpal has ordered preliminary inquiries in only 289 cases, and prosecution sanctions have been granted in only seven cases.

• Right to Information activist Anjali Bhardwaj questioned the Lokpal’s transparency and institutional development, stating that it has not uploaded any annual report since 2021-22 and its prosecution wing was notified only in June 2025.

• The controversial tender for seven luxury cars was a response to public outrage, but activists argue that the Lokpal should save public money and avoid unnecessary extravagance.
