A Lancet report identifies India’s growing cancer issue. A reassessment of public health strategies, prevention, and access is needed
• A recent report in The Lancet highlights India’s escalating cancer crisis, with incidence rising from 84.8 per 100,000 in 1990 to 107.2 per 100,000 in 2023, leading to about 1.5 million annual diagnoses.
• Cancer mortality has also increased, from 71.7 per 100,000 to 86.9 per 100,000, resulting in approximately 1.21 million deaths each year.
• The burden of cancer is exacerbated by late diagnoses, uneven access to care, and preventable complications.
• Almost 70% of cancers are linked to modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, air pollution, obesity, and inadequate public awareness.
• The report stresses that preventive action must be integral to India’s cancer strategy, including investments in clean environments and comprehensive public awareness campaigns.
• Technological advancements, like mobile health units and AI-enabled screenings, demonstrate progress, but access remains limited.
• Initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka (AB-ArK) scheme have improved access to oncology procedures significantly.
• However, challenges persist, including the high cost of CAR-T therapy, inconsistent screening programs, and underdeveloped cancer registry infrastructure.
• Creating a national cancer map is crucial for resource allocation and understanding regional cancer trends.
• Without substantial improvements in healthcare infrastructure and clinical trials, the benefits of innovation may only reach a privileged few, leaving the majority vulnerable to preventable cancer outcomes.
Cancer Treatment Accessibility is important topic for Civil service exam (WBCS).
