A trio has won the Physics Nobel Prize for developing a device that demonstrates quantum tunneling
• The Nobel Prize for Physics will be awarded this year to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis for their collaboration on understanding quantum phenomena.
• Their experiments focused on insights into the quantum world, where particles behave unpredictably as they are reduced to single entities.
• A key concept introduced is “tunnelling,” where particles can pass through barriers, akin to a cricket ball unexpectedly burrowing into the ground.
• The scientists demonstrated the ability to organize single particles to exhibit tunnelling properties.
• They developed an electrical circuit consisting of two superconductors separated by a non-conductive layer known as a Josephson junction, enabling current flow without resistance.
Physics Nobel quantum tunneling is important topic for Civil service exam (WBCS).\
