Additional inspections of pharmaceutical firms are planned in response to the cough syrup crisis

• The Union Health Ministry has started a risk-based inspection of manufacturing units for 19 drugs in six states.

• This action follows the discovery of diethylene glycol (DEG) above permissible limits in Coldrif cough syrup samples by the Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department.

• An ongoing investigation relates to the deaths of at least 10 children linked to cough syrup consumption in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

• The Ministry aims to identify quality failure causes and recommend improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.

• Madhya Pradesh’s government has prohibited the sale and distribution of Coldrif syrup.

• The State’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has also banned Coldrif and products from its manufacturer, Sresan Pharmaceuticals, after determining a batch was “not of standard quality” and contaminated with DEG.

• The Union Health Ministry, however, has stated that the syrup samples do not contain DEG or ethylene glycol (EG).
