Amendment committees for nuclear liability laws: Minister
• The government has formed committees to discuss amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLNDA).
• The aim is to allow private companies to participate in building and commissioning future nuclear reactors.
• The legislation was first announced in Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech on February 1.
• Western international nuclear power companies have criticized the clauses in the CLNDA, arguing they are unacceptable and contradict the international Convention for Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC).
• The committees will also examine waste management, fuel sourcing and handling, decommissioning, and security and safety measures.
