Artificial Wombs and Fertility Treatments: Beyond Science Fiction

• Artificial wombs are being researched for their potential to gestate and nurture humans.

• Hung-Ching Liu, a professor at Cornell University, engineered endometrial tissue and successfully implanted and grown mouse embryos.

• In Japan, goat foetuses were grown in a prototype womb.

• In New South Wales, an artificial womb designed to give birth to live sharks was successfully tested.

• Womb replacement surgery became a reality in 2014, with five women from Sweden and 11 from the U.K. having their wombs replaced.

• The first baby born from a womb transplant was in Sweden in 2014.

• Around 135 such transplants have been carried out in over a dozen countries, with approximately 65 babies born.

• Artificial wombs are mainly used to nurture preterm babies, with an artificial placenta providing oxygen and nutrients.

• Experiments are also ongoing to try and produce eggs and sperm from stem cells.
