• The 21st Livestock Census in India is expected to count 16 species and their 219 breeds.
• The census will be conducted in October 2024, with results expected by July 2025.
• The Central government expects the Census to provide updated data on the livestock population, enabling the government to address key issues like disease control, breed improvement, and rural livelihoods.
• The Census will also provide information on the number of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, camels, pigs, dogs, chicken, ducks, geese, and yaks.
• Over 2.1 crore people in India are engaged in livestock farming.
• The 20th Livestock Census saw a 37.1% decrease in the camel population, a 12.03% decline in pigs, a 45.2% decrease in horses and ponies, a 61.2% decrease in donkeys, and a 57.1% decrease in mules.
• The Centre expects an increase in the figures due to increased investment in animals after COVID-19.
