Astrosat, India’s first space observatory, celebrates its 10-year anniversary

• AstroSat, India’s first dedicated space astronomy observatory, marked a decade of operations on September 28, 2025.

• Launched by PSLV-C30 (XL) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, it was initially designed for a five-year mission but continues to operate effectively.

• Over the past ten years, AstroSat has made significant discoveries related to black holes, neutron stars, and distant galaxies.

• The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) commemorated AstroSat’s achievements, highlighting its contributions to our understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum.

• AstroSat is equipped with five payloads:

– Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT)

– Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC)

– Cadmium–Zinc–Telluride Imager (CZTI)

– Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT)

– Scanning Sky Monitor (SSM)

• The project involved collaboration among major Indian astronomy institutions as well as participation from institutions in Canada and the U.K.
