At least 36 Dead in Stampedat Rally in Karur

• Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay died in a stampede at a rally in Karur, India.

• The rally, held at Velusamypuram, was part of his State-wide political tour.

• The crowd, mostly youngsters, moved to see Vijay’s vehicle, causing chaos and confusion.

• Several people fell on a shed where a generator was placed to provide electricity.

• Vijay paused his speech and instructed party members to call an ambulance when he noticed a collapse near his vehicle.

• Ambulances arrived and transported the injured to the old Government Hospital and the Government Medical College Hospital in Karur.

• Nearly 50 others are being treated in the ICU ward, with many still in serious condition.

• Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a solatium of ₹10 lakh to the families of those who died and ₹1 lakh for those who were hospitalised.

• The State government has announced a panel to probe the circumstances leading to the stampede.
