Autism care need of the hour?
• U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a massive testing and research effort to identify environmental toxins responsible for the growing “epidemic” of autism.
• The Department of Health and Human Services will launch new studies focusing on environmental substances.
• Kennedy called autism “preventable” and expected answers by September this year.
Understanding Autism
• Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a diverse group of conditions characterized by difficulty with social interaction and communication, atypical patterns of activities and behaviors, and difficulty with social interaction and communication.
• Autism is often diagnosed later in life, but can be detected in early childhood.
Prevention Strategies
• Existing research suggests multiple factors, possibly both genetic and environmental, may contribute to autism.
• The MMR vaccine, linked to autism, does not cause autism, nor do other childhood vaccines increase the risk of autism.
Rise of Autism
• The prevalence of ASD is growing due to recognition of the condition and more inclusive criteria.
• Environmental factors could also contribute to the rise, triggers that could make ASD manifest.
Autism Care and Support
• Early diagnosis and intervention are still the priority, along with more psycho-education for families and a realistic approach to interventions.
• More focus should be given to maternal health during pregnancy, especially mental health, to ensure optimal environments for the growing foetus and infants and toddlers.
