Bengal CM Announces Scheme for Migrant Workers

• West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announces a new scheme, Shramashree, to provide monthly cash incentives to migrant workers who return to the state after facing harassment in other states.

• The scheme, called Shramashree, will provide a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 for up to one year until they find a job.

• Migrant workers and their families will also receive benefits from other State government schemes, including ration cards and Swasthya Sathi free healthcare scheme cards.

• Banerjee cites the return of about 10,000 Bengali-speaking migrants who have returned to the state.

• She also alleges that a mental health survey conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani, was an “indirect” way of facilitating the National Register of Citizenship in the State.
