Brahmos missile development for extended range and NG variant is underway.
• The BrahMos-NG, a compact air-launched version of the supersonic cruise missile, is in advanced development.
• The original BrahMos, a joint development between India and Russia, was used in the recent confrontation with Pakistan to strike air bases.
• The range of the BrahMos was originally capped at 290 km, but since India joined the grouping in June 2016, it has been extended to 450 km.
• The maiden trial has been conducted, with more trials expected.
• The BrahMos-NG is lighter than land and ship variants and can be mounted on other fighters, including indigenous LCATejas.
• The BrahMos-NG was used in precision hits on Pakistani military targets during strikes by the Indian Air Force.
