Cancer Map Study in India

• India has the third-highest number of cancer cases globally, with a 64.47% ratio of cancer morbidities to malignancy incidences in 2022.

• The Indian Council of Medical Research’s Cancer Registry programme began in the early 1980s.

• A study of 43 cancer registries across the country by national investigators could provide crucial data on cancer types and vulnerabilities of different sections of people, gender-wise and regionally.

• Women accounted for a higher proportion of the cases (51%), indicating a challenge in cancer detection and treatment.

• Breast and cervical cancers, which account for over 40% of cases among women, are easier to detect and have better treatment outcomes.

• Oral, lung, and gastric cancer are detected at a relatively later stage in the country, indicating a significant number of such cases still fall off the radar.

• The study flags the high burden of the disease, especially oral cancer, in several parts of the Northeast, which could help frame region-specific awareness initiatives and detection programmes.

• The study suggests that the Centre and state governments should make data more robust to foster better understanding of common preventable causes, improve resource utilization, and make government programs more effective.
