CAQM seeks for punishment against officials for stubble burning

• The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has intensified efforts against stubble burning as the paddy harvest season begins in northern India.

• District Collectors, Magistrates, and Deputy Commissioners in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi are now authorized to file complaints against negligent officials.

• A directive issued on October 1 holds nodal officers and supervisory officers responsible for failing to enforce anti-pollution measures.

• This initiative aims to enhance monitoring and enforcement of regulations regarding stubble burning, which is a major cause of winter air pollution.

• Punjab has seen a decrease in stubble burning incidents this year, with 95 reported compared to 179 the previous year, the lowest in six years.

• The Supreme Court has recently called for a stricter approach to combat stubble burning.

• Air pollution in Delhi-NCR typically worsens in winter due to meteorological conditions, coinciding with the peak of paddy stubble burning in October and November.

• Haryana and Uttar Pradesh also contribute to deteriorating air quality alongside Punjab.
