  • Casteism and Honour Killings in India: A Crossroads Analysis
Posted on August 18th, 2025 in Exam Details (QP Included)

    • Caste is a deeply rooted social phenomenon in India, influenced by social customs and family norms.

    • Social justice interventions have been a major threat to caste rigidity, allowing marginalized communities, particularly Dalits, to integrate into mainstream society.

    • This has led to a new frontier of social tension, with romantic unions crossing caste lines, particularly between Dalit men and dominant caste women.

    Tamil Nadu’s Caste Paradox

    • Despite strong democratic voices against casteism, caste is glorified on social media, leading to some accounts defending caste killings.

    • The paradox suggests that caste continues to dictate social preferences, marriage alliances, and “honourable behavior.”

    Family and Caste

    • The caste system survives because it is protected and transmitted within the family, making it transgenerational.

    • The psychological and cultural importance of the ‘family’ is changing, with new models of relationship emerging, such as open partnerships, cohabitation, single living, and self-parenting.

    • As the family unit weakens, so does the primary mechanism through which caste is enforced and reproduced.

    Caste in India: A Crossroads

    • There are violent reactions and online glorifification of caste, while strong democratic voices against honour killings and a new generation slowly withdrawing from social values are present.

    • Tamil Nadu represents this contradiction, a State where both the loudest resistance to casteism and the quietest internal caste pride coexist.

Casteism and Honour Killings is important topic for Civil service exam (WBCS).
