Chirag Paswan: A Political Leader in Bihar

• Chirag Paswan, a Cabinet minister and a prominent figure in Bihar politics, has transformed from being the political heir to his father Ram Vilas Paswan, founder of the Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJP).

• Despite his film career failing, Paswan has gained significant political traction in Bihar, securing 29 seats to contest the upcoming elections under the NDA banner.

• Despite the party’s poor performance in previous polls, Paswan has managed to secure at least “80%” of seats of his choice.

• The LJP, formed in 2000 by his father, has only 5% vote share in Bihar Assembly.

• The NDA has been backpedalled in the run-up to polls, with the party claiming that if they had more seats, Paswan would have contested.

• The LJP will be campaigning for votes on Nitish Kumar’s behalf for the first time this year, with Paswans constituting the core votebank of the party.

• Despite criticism from his father and son, Paswan sees the term ‘Dalit leader’ as limiting and prefers to call himself a ‘Bahujan’ leader, appealing to a wider caste and community.

• Paswan, who will turn 43 on October 30, is still a young leader with 30-years of political career ahead.
