    Supreme Court Upholds Section 6A of Citizenship Act, 1955
    • The Supreme Court upheld Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, allowing Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam to secure Indian citizenship.
    • The court emphasized the principle of fraternity, stating that it cannot be selectively applied to certain sections of Assam.
    • Section 6A, rooted in the Assam Accord of 1985, mandates that immigrants who entered Assam before January 1, 1966, are Indian citizens.
    • The section barred citizenship to those who entered Assam after March 25, 1971.
    • Justice Surya Kant attributed the burden of incessant migration from Bangladesh to the government’s failure to detect and deport post-1971 immigrants.
