Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Challenged

• Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist, is requesting his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, to share handwritten notes on his detention.

• Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has moved the Supreme Court to challenge his preventive detention under the National Security Act (NSA), 1980.

• The Union government has informed the Supreme Court that it is not opposed to Wangchuk sharing these notes with his lawyer.

• Angmo has requested the authorities to produce her husband before the court after protests in Leh turned violent.

• Wangchuk’s lawyer, Kapil Sibal, stated that Wangchuk is entitled to the assistance of his lawyer.

• The court allowed Angmo to amend her habeas corpus plea, allowing her to challenge the detention based on the grounds communicated by the Union government.
