• Extreme rainfall events, flash floods, and landslides in the Himalaya have taken a toll in parts of the Northeast, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.

• The latest tragedy in the Himalaya involved over 40 people, mostly Vaishno Devi pilgrims, being swept away by flash floods and buried under rocks in Jammu.

• Authorities should step up vigilance and prioritize safety on roads that see heavy traffic, even during peak monsoon.

• The Centre, state governments in the Himalayan region, and research institutions should collaborate to create warning mechanisms that alert people to weather vagaries.

• J&K is among the more land-slide-prone regions of the country, with 12% of its “mapped hilly area falling under the highly-susceptible category.”

• Experts advise building up knowledge to take on such vagaries, such as creating a council of Himalayan states, to gauge the stress on the region’s ecosystem and create more detailed repositories.
