Commission Investigating SC Tag for Dalit Converts to Have One More Year
• The Commission of Inquiry, set up by the Central government, has been granted a one-year extension to submit its report on the possibility of granting Scheduled Caste (SC) status to all Dalit converts.
• The three-member panel, led by former Chief Justice of India Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, has been given time until October 10, 2025.
• The commission is currently conducting public consultations with interest groups and seeking views from various States and Union Territories on the issue.
• The Centre has made a presentation to the commission outlining its position on the issue.
• The Narendra Modi-led government has previously justified the exclusion of Dalit Christians and Muslims from the SC list due to the “foreign origins” of Islam and Christianity.
