• Current conservation frameworks are influenced by historical circumstances, with colonial officers locating and cataloging monuments, promulgating preservation laws, and prescribing procedures for structural integrity.

• John Marshall’s Conservation Manual (1923) advocated extensive repair of ancient monuments and reshaping their surroundings into gardens.

• Many protected monuments are falling apart, and recommendations of a conservation policy enunciated in 2014 are being irregularly followed.

• A new approach to conserving monuments could be based on the writings of modern India builders, such as Sarvodaya and Mahatma Gandhi.

• The ASI’s new conservation manual should propose that when an edifice is conserved, its structural fabric should be tended and the lives of all who live around it and visit it should be improved.

• The manual should include recommendations for archaeologists to acknowledge their distance from the deep past and make their physical interventions of a monument’s fabric clearer for visitors.

• The conservation manual should also include periodic reviews of the aptness of preservation materials to ensure they do not harm historical fabrics.
