Deport foreigners, do not detain them for eternity: SC
• The Supreme Court has criticized the Assam government for detaining indefinitely declared foreigners in detention camps.
• The court questioned the State’s affidavit that it was not sending nationality verification forms to the Ministry of External Affairs.
• The court questioned the State’s concern over the addresses of the detainees, stating that once they are identified as foreigners, they should be deported immediately.
• The court ordered the Union government to record the details of declared foreigners and the number of deported persons.
• The court also directed the State to file a proper affidavit reporting compliance.
• The court reminded the State that the public exchequer bears the cost of the detention of the foreigners in the detention centres.
• The case is scheduled for February 25.
