    • The Supreme Court ruled on May 23, 2021, to “progressively reduce” IPS deputation in CAPFs.
    • The Home Ministry continues to appoint IPS officers to senior posts, despite the court’s ruling.
    • The Home Ministry, the cadre controlling authority for CAPFs and the IPS, is reportedly benefiting from the judgment.
    • Currently, 20% and 50% of posts in the rank of Deputy Inspector-General and Inspector-General in CAPFs are reserved for IPS officers.

    • The high number of posts reserved for IPS officers leads to service stagnation and slow promotion rates for CAPF officers.
