    • India’s entrance examination system is a toxic race, with nearly 70 lakh students competing for seats.

    • The competition is intense, leading to a coaching industry and a culture of pressure.

    • Recent controversies highlight a broken system, with branch closures, financial misconduct, and student suicides.

    • The root issue lies in an entrance examination system that overqualifies students and distorts merit.

    • The system demands extraordinary performance due to limited seats, vast applicant numbers, and disparities in college academic quality.

    • This system sidelines capable students, favors those who can afford coaching, and exacerbates urban-rural, gender, and regional imbalances.

    • The psychological and social consequences of this system are severe, with students facing immense pressure and wealthier families privileged by top-tier coaching.

    • Global models like the Netherlands and China can be used to address these issues.

    • The solution lies in simplifying admissions, trusting the school system, and shielding students from an excessive number of examinations.

    • A threshold of 80% in physics, chemistry, and mathematics could be set for eligibility, and students would be grouped into categories and allocated seats or a rank number through a weighted lottery.

    • To enhance equity, 50% of IIT seats could be reserved vertically for rural students educated in government schools.

    • If entrance examinations persist, coaching should be banned or nationalised, with free online study materials and lectures.

    • To foster diversity, the IITs could introduce an annual student exchange programme, randomly selecting students to study across different IIT campuses over four years.

    • Incentivising the transfer of professors between IITs could ensure uniform academic standards and reinforce the equal value of a B.Tech from any IIT.

India Entrance Exam Reform is important topic for Civil service exam (WBCS).
