Drone-Driven Drug Smuggling Rises Along India-Pakistan Border

• Drone-driven drug smuggling along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab has seen a significant increase from 2021 to 2024, according to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) annual report.

• The use of drones for cross-border narcotics smuggling has become a significant threat to India’s internal security, particularly along the Indo-Pak border in Punjab.

• The report states that in 2024, the number of seizures of narcotics recovered from drone sightings and recoveries increased from 3 cases in 2021 to 179 in 2024.

• The NCB confiscated about 13,306 quintals of narcotic substances, with cannabis accounting for 41% of total seizures and opiates, including heroin, about 39%.

• The report also noted that coastal routes are being exploited for smuggling of synthetic drugs and precursors.

• In 2024, 1,483 kg of cocaine was seized, a significant increase from the quantity seized in 2020 and five times higher than in 2023.
