Election Commission Directs Bihar CEO to Accept Aadhaar as 12th Document for SIR Drive

• The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar to accept Aadhaar as the 12th document during the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

• This follows a Supreme Court order to include Aadhaar as the 12th document in the list of ‘indicative’ documents for electoral roll inclusion or exclusion.

• The EC clarified that Aadhaar should be accepted as proof of identity, not as proof of citizenship.

• The EC clarified that Aadhaar is already listed as a document to establish a person’s identity under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
