Election Commission summons West Bengal Chief Secretary over’refusal’ to act against errant officials

• The Election Commission (EC) summons West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to its headquarters in New Delhi.

• Pant is asked to report to Nirvachan Sadan by 5 p.m. on August 13.

• The order was issued a day after the Chief Secretary wrote to the EC regarding its order to suspend four officials and a casual worker for “irregularities” in the preparation of electoral rolls.

• Pant stated that the government had removed two of the five personnel from active duty, but not suspended or booked any of them.

• Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the EC’s order and stated she would not allow any State government official to be punished on the poll body’s directions.
