Environment Ministry Authorizes Creation of Independent Class of Environment Auditors

• The Environment Ministry has authorized the creation of a new class of ‘environment auditors’ to supplement State pollution control Boards’ work.

• Private agencies can become accredited as auditors under the Environment Audit Rules, 2025.

• These auditors can evaluate project compliance with environmental laws and best practices in pollution prevention, control, and abatement.

• The scheme aims to bridge manpower and infrastructure deficits, strengthen environmental compliance mechanisms, and ensure transparency, accountability, and credibility.

• Audits can be used for compliance with Green Credit Rules, allowing individuals and organizations to gain tradeable “credits” for afforestation, sustainable water management, and waste management.
