Erratic Monsoon Intensifies Flood Risks in Rajasthan

• Nearly 77% of Rajasthan’s tehsils experienced increased rainfall during June-September, exceeding 30% from the 1982-2011 climate baseline.

• The state also saw one of the sharpest increases in heavy rainfall days, leading to repeated floods and urban waterlogging.

• The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) highlighted the shift in rainfall patterns intensifying flood risks and waterlogging in several cities.

• A 2024 study of CEEW quantified changes in rainfall patterns during the decade of 2012-2022, assessing changes during the south-west monsoon of June-September and the north-east monsoon of October-December.

• Key findings: 55% of all tehsils in the country saw an increase of more than 10% in south-west monsoon rainfall in the past decade, while 11% saw a decline compared to the climatic baseline of 1982-2011.

• CEEW fellow Vishwas Chitale urged Rajasthan to invest in granular climate observation networks, modernize early warning systems, and formulate local-level climate action plans to build climate resilience.
