Gender Inequality in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

• In 2018, IITs introduced a quota for women in undergraduate engineering courses, aiming to address gender imbalance.

• The policy increased female enrolment between 19 and 21% across campuses.

• However, data from JEE Advanced examination organising institutes shows that the proportion of women students has flattened at around 20% of total admissions.

• The IITs have been working towards structural and cultural changes to counteract the glass ceiling, including better hostels, safe recreational spaces, improved washroom facilities, and access to mental health tools.

• The next step is to change the culture that shapes female students before they arrive at IITs, including reforming school pedagogy, hosting workshops addressing unconscious bias, and encouraging girls to question and solve at every step of their academic journey.

• Government initiatives like the Vigyan Jyoti programme and CBSE’s UDAAN scheme provide financial assistance, mentoring, and exposure to IITs, IISERS, and CSIR labs for girls.

• Despite parity achieved in certain STEM fields, barriers to aspiration continue to funnel women away from technical fields.

• Women can change the glass ceiling by seeing themselves as part of a continuum, not as outliers rewriting the rules, but as rightful heirs to a legacy that includes them unselfconsciously.
