Genetically Modified Maize Trials at Punjab University
• Field trials of two types of genetically modified maize are set to begin at Punjab Agricultural University this summer.
• The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee, the top regulator for the sector, approved the trials after receiving consent from the Punjab government.
• The trials will focus on weed-control efficacy in herbicide-tolerant maize hybrids and insect-protected maize hybrids against targeted lepidopteran pests.
• The trials are for research purposes only and are not recommended for commercial cultivation.
• The Coalition for a GM-Free India has urged the Punjab government to withdraw its no-objection certificate for the trials.
