Gujarat has two indigenously developed pressurized heavy water reactors that have been granted an operating license.
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) granted license to operate two 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactors at Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat.
• The license was issued after completing design and commissioning safety reviews.
• The license was handed over to NPCIL on July 3, 2023.
• The KAPS-3 reactor received full power permission in August 2023, while the KAPS-4 unit received it in August 2024.
• The licensing process involved rigorous safety reviews and assessment of the reactor design, covering the entire life cycle.
• The license is a boost for NPCIL’s efforts to build 10 700 MWe PHWRs in fleet mode
