HC authorizes Union Carbide toxic waste trial disposal.
• The Madhya Pradesh High Court has allowed the state government to conduct three trial runs for the elimination of toxic waste from the Union Carbide factory.
• The waste, totaling 358 tonnes, will be disposed of at an incineration facility in Pithampur.
• The trial runs will be conducted on February 27, March 4, and March 10 at different burning rates, increasing the rate after each successful run.
• The court has also barred the media from publishing “fake news.”
• The first batch of waste will be incinerated at a feed rate of 135 kg per hour, with the next two batches to be 270 kg.
• The results of the trial runs will be reviewed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which will recommend a fixed feed rate for the remaining waste.
