IDF developing Type 2 diabetes guidelines
• The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is developing new guidelines for Type 2 diabetes treatment in consultation with a global expert panel.
• The guidelines are being evaluated and will be launched in Bangkok in April during the World Congress.
• The IDF’s guidelines aim to apply the practice to the environment in specific countries, focusing on the patient rather than the drugs.
• The guidelines aim to set the minimum, basic care that reflects the basic right of anyone with diabetes for treatment.
• The guidelines are not suitable for all countries due to accessibility and affordability issues, as per V. Mohan, chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre, Chennai.
• The IDF is also developing a global diabetes index to compare the quality of diabetes care across different countries.
• The new guidelines feature the chain of institutions Dr. Mohan runs, which will serve as a role model for diabetes care in different areas with varying income groups.
