Imprisoned Journalists Win EU’s Top Human Rights Award
• Two imprisoned journalists, one in Belarus and the other in Georgia, have been awarded the Sakharov Prize.
• Andrzej Poczobut, a correspondent for Gazeta Wyborcza, was convicted of “harming Belarus’ national security” and sentenced to eight years in prison.
• Mzia Amaghlobeli, a prominent journalist in Georgia, was convicted of slapping a police chief during an anti-government protest and sentenced to two years in prison.
• The Sakharov Prize, named after Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, was created in 1988 to honor individuals or groups defending human rights and basic freedoms.
