In Hema committee report, SC praises those who testified before SIT.
• The Supreme Court acknowledged the courage of women who lodged sexual abuse complaints in the Malayalam film industry.
• The court commended the women survivors and witnesses who made statements before the K. Hema Committee and a State-appointed Special Investigation Team.
• However, the court clarified that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) cannot unilaterally register First Information Reports (FIRs) in cases where the women did not want to pursue the matter or initiate criminal proceedings.
• The court was hearing a petition filed by film producer Sajimon Parayil, who claimed the Kerala High Court had directed the SIT to register FIRs on every statement made by survivors/witnesses.
• The Kerala Women’s Commission alleged that Parayil was indirectly trying to stall the probe.
