In pursuit of controversies R.
• Ravi, a retired IPS officer, has been a source of controversy in Tamil Nadu for the last three years.
• He was the Union government’s representative and signed a framework agreement with a rebel Naga group in New Delhi in 2015.
• The trouble began over 40 months ago, even before Ravi became the 26th Governor of Tamil Nadu.
• The first sign of trouble between the Governor and the DMK government was over the clearance to the legislation seeking exemption from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical courses.
• The DMK government demanded Ravi’s ouster in January 2022, and the State Assembly re-adopted the Bill in February 2022.
• Ravi is also Chancellor of State Universities, pushing for the implementation of the UGC’s 2018 Regulations for the selection of Vice Chancellors.
• Ravi raised eyebrows in May-June 2023 with Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji, who was dismissed from the Cabinet after the Supreme Court cleared the decks for law enforcement authorities to proceed against him in a case of alleged corruption.
• Ravi’s refusal to toe the line of the State government during the Governor’s customary address to the Assembly has become an annual feature.
• The Chief Minister contends that the Governor’s continuation has helped the Dravidian movement grow further in the State.
