India imposes port restrictions on Bangladeshi jute to protect local industries

• The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has imposed a new order on jute imports, citing Bangladesh’s subsidies as a threat to local Indian industries.

• The items included bleached and unbleached woven fabrics of jute, twine cordage, rope made of jute, and sacks and bags of jute with a large market in India.

• The order aims to tighten the import of jute and products made from Bangladeshi jute.

• The order follows a May 17 declaration of port restriction by the DGFT targeting ready-made garments from Bangladesh.

• Other items banned include exports of fruits, fruit flavoured drinks, processed food items, cotton and cotton yarn waste, plastic and PVC finished goods, and wooden furniture.

• The move intensifies against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s visit to China in March, where it was described as the second largest ready-made garment manufacturer after China.
