India Suspends Pakistani Discussions on Indus Waters
• Permanent Indus Commission (PIC) to cease meetings until India and Pakistan discuss renegotiation of the 64-year-old Indus Water Treaty.
• Last meeting was held in Delhi in May 2022.
• India has written four times to Pakistan since January 2023 for talks on revising the treaty.
• The PIC is a key product of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), signed in 1960 to manage the sharing of six Himalayan rivers.
• Despite wars and disputes, the PIC has been a permanent fixture.
• India’s call to renegotiate the IWT in January 2023 risks the PIC’s oblivion.
