India to enclose Myanmar border
• The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved a ₹31,000 crore proposal in March 2024 to fence the Indo-Myanmar border and construct roads for better connectivity to Assam Rifles company operating bases.
• The project includes a fence and 64 border roads, with a total cost of ₹31,031.9 crore.
• The proposal has faced opposition from Naga and Kuki-Zo bodies, who fear it will disrupt ethnic and familial ties.
• The revised Foreign Mission Regulation (FMR) has started functioning at 22 out of 43 crossing points along the Myanmar border, with 11 of these gates in Manipur.
• Surveillance cameras will be placed along the fence to monitor the area better.
• The border gates and fencing will ensure that people crossing the border are accounted for.
• The Union Ministry of Home Affairs finalised a fresh protocol to regulate the movement of people living within 10 km of the border in December 2024.
