India to Submit Updated Carbon-Reduction Targets by COP30

• India plans to submit updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for carbon-reduction by the start of COP30.

• The updated NDCs, or NDC 3.0, are expected to reflect the degree of emissions reductions by 2035.

• India last updated its NDCs in 2022, committing to reduce GDP emissions intensity by 45% of 2005 levels, source half of its electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, and create a carbon sink of at least two billion tonnes by 2030.

• Only 30 out of 190 countries have submitted their NDCs so far.

• Brazil, which assumes the COP presidency, is assessing what hindered countries from achieving their stated NDCs.

• The ambition to undertake significant emission cuts seems muted.

• The European Union has yet to announce a 2035 target, but has a long-term goal to be “net zero” by 2050.

• Australia updated its NDCs to aim to cut emissions to 62%-70% of 2005 levels by 2035.

• The numbers made public will be used in a UN’synthesis report’ to show how far the globe is from the Paris Agreement targets.
