India, US toward limited trade accord
• An India-U.S. trade deal, including a potential initial “mini-deal” of limited concessions, is expected to be finalized by the fall season’s original deadline between September and November in the U.S.
• Both India and the U.S. expressed confidence in finalizing an initial deal before July 9.
• Delegation visits by an Indian team and a U.S. team have been conducted to further the negotiations.
• Despite productive talks, “sticky issues” remain, including tariffs on steel and aluminum.
• U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order doubling tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to 50% on June 4, following a March hike in import duties on these metals.
