Indian Agencies Should Investigate US Allegations of Bribery

    • The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted Gautam Adani and his associates for bribery, citing perceived violations of U.S. laws against corrupt transactions with foreign entities.

    • India needs to order its own probe under domestic anti-corruption law.

    • The Modi regime has shown reluctance to acknowledge any wrongdoing by the Adani Group, arguing its political interests are inseparable from Adani’s corporate interests.

    • The Union government has remained receptive to calls for a joint parliamentary committee probe into the allegations.

    • The Supreme Court of India rejected a demand for an independent Adani probe.

    • Several state governments, including Andhra Pradesh, have been named in the overseas indictment relating to the supply of solar power from Adani Green and Azure Power Global Ltd.

    • The indictment discusses internal messages among the defendants about how “the discoms are being motivated.”

    • The Centre should shed its reluctance to investigate the Adani Group, as the fortunes of Adani may spiral.
