Indian Commerce Ministry Efforts to Control Dumping and Import Surges
• The Ministry of Commerce is using various departments to combat import surges and dumping in India due to trading partner malpractice.
• The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) have initiated anti-dumping investigations on eight product lines from 12 countries.
• Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal stated that the Department of Commerce is monitoring import surges for all commodities and sharing the surge reports with other Ministries.
• The DGFT restricted the import of alloys of palladium, rhodium, and iridium containing more than 1% of gold, as importers were importing gold disguised as these metal alloys.
• The DGTR has initiated eight investigations on possible dumping activities, including the import of industrial chemicals from various countries, glass wool from Egypt, and paperboards from Indonesia.
